Coach still has faith in depleted Alpiners

The Alpiners men’s team will get a thorough test of their depth in round four of Premier League Hockey in Christchurch today.

The defending champions will host the Falcons.

The Alpiners are unbeaten after three games, but they are missing 11 Black Sticks. That’s an entire team.

The absentees are doing God’s work, though. The Black Sticks men have departed for the Sultan Azlan Shah Cup being held in Malaysia on November 23-30.

They will compete with some of the world's top hockey nations, including Malaysia, Korea, Canada, India and Belgium.

What that means for the Alpiners is a vastly different-looking lineup.

Coach Blair Tarrant is far from daunted by the prospect.

He knows the Falcons are not as badly impacted, but he is backing the depth in his squad.

"It'll test the depth, but I've got a lot of trust in the guys that were selected in the squad, and they'll be chomping at the bit to get out there and show how good they are," Tarrant said.

"It is a great opportunity for [them] to continue how the Alpiners have been playing."

Among the missing horde is the guy who scored five goals in the 5-3 win against the Tridents in round three — veteran Black Sticks striker Sam Lane.

"Yeah, it was pretty impressive. But we expect that out of him, to be honest.

"He's pretty bloody good in the circle.

"He actually wrote in his private channel with the two coaches that he's going to score a hat-trick, so he went even better and scored five."

The likes of Johnny Thorn, Daniel Torr and Nick Haig will fill some of the gaps.

The Falcons are missing "maybe three or four players", so they will not have to fill as many slots. And they will have a point to prove.

They were thumped 9-0 by the Tridents and 2-0 by the Mavericks last weekend.

That should give Tarrant some comfort, but it does not.

"It was an interesting game. It was 0-0 at halftime and either team could have scored five goals in the first half.

"The Falcons did fall away in the second half, but it wasn’t a 9-0 match."

The Alpiners women lost both their games last weekend and are in last place. They also host the Falcons, who are unbeaten with three consecutive wins.
