The New Zealand Motorsport Academy is breaking down the country's best young talent in Dunedin this week.

They will then be rebuilt: faster, fitter, stronger, able to drive in temperatures exceeding 40degC, more confident with sponsors and the media, versed in the art of public speaking and able to cook and purchase nutritious food for themselves.

Trust manager Ian Snellgrove described the intensive week-long academy as a one-stop shop designed to prepare motorsport athletes for the many demands of professional sport.

"The academy deals with all the bits they need to know outside the car," he said.

Apprentice electrician and reigning New Zealand and North Island Yamaha light class champion Daniel Kinsman (18), of Auckland, is one of nine motorsport athletes attending the academy - and the first to fill the designated spot for a karter.

"I think it's a great honour to be the first kartsport athlete included. Hopefully, I can do well so more can follow," he said.

Motorsport New Zealand president Shayne Harris said the inclusion of a karter for the first time was in recognition of the "important role that kartsports plays in introducing youngsters to the thrills and skills of motorsport".

Three rally co-drivers have been selected, including Tarryn Cox (21), of Rotorua, who has also received a wildcard into the Asia-Pacific category at the forthcoming Rally of Whangarei with her brother Sloan.

The academy is in its eighth year and already boasts Shane Van Gisbergen, Brendon Hartley and current GP3 leader Mitch Evans among its graduates.

The athletes receive partial funding for a year on completion of the course and will be presented with a career plan to tackle their individual weaknesses.

Further high performance scholarships are then given to the most promising prospects.

Sarah Coatsworth (33), of Rotorua, Christopher Cox (18), of Rangiora, Jason Farmer (30), of Huntly, Kyle George (19), of Hamilton, Andre Heimgartner (16), of Auckland, and Hayden Pedersen (16), of Rotorua, are also attending the academy.
