Netball: College A too accomplished for Southern B

Only one Dunedin premier A match was played on Saturday at the Edgar Centre, with College A an easy 67-28 winner over Southern B.

The re-scheduling of premier A matches appears to be commonplace this season, with many games played outside the traditional Saturday competition. This disruption has resulted in some teams having played more games than others and an incomplete points table.

The rescheduling appears to be due to both umpire and player unavailability, with some players unable to play for their clubs on a Saturday due to their involvement in the representative Lois Muir Challenge competition.

Premier B and C and senior games are still being played in the regular Saturday slot.

One bright spot is the resurgence of the College club. After three seasons of re-building it is now re-establishing itself as one of the top four clubs.

Its A team is putting in consistent performances in premier A and its B team leads the premier B competition after its win on Saturday over Macandrew A 47 43.

College A's win over Southern B never looked in doubt. It amassed an 18-8 first-quarter lead which it continued to extend throughout the entire match, achieved through a respectable shooting display (67 from 84, 80%) built on the back of some tireless team defence.

College's B team did not have it as easy in its match, taking until the final quarter to beat a tenacious Macandrew A. In a match locked at 31-31 at three-quarter time, it was anyone's game. In the final quarter, College B was the steadier of the two and absorbed the pressure.

If it maintains this form it will be the challenger in the promotion-relegation match at the end of round one.
