Dunedin made a solid start to the national championships with a 51-49 win over Kapiti-Manawatu in its opening game in Auckland yesterday.

The team formerly known as Otago is chasing a threepeat and stole a march on its opponent, shooting out to 15-9 lead at the first break.

It extended its lead by one at halftime and took a 41-34 lead into the final quarter.

But Kapiti-Manawatu rallied in the final stanza and gave the defending champion some anxious moments. Still, coach Lauren Piebenga was satisfied with her side's opening display.

''They gave us plenty to think about at times,'' Piebenga said.

''But the girls mostly maintained their composure, but it did get really tight in those last few minutes. Fortunately, we hung on.

''We probably took a few too many risks and needed to go back to our basics. Once we did that we were playing well.

''But they are an experienced side and we are very happy to walk away with four points.''

Shooter Te Paea Selby-Rickit was solid under the net, landing 39 of her 45 attempts.

Olivia Bates started at goal attack and scored seven from 10.

Back-up shooter Kirsten Craig replaced Bates midway through the third quarter and slotted five from eight.

At the defensive end, 17-year-old Abby Erwood got the nod at goal keep and partnered Zoe Walker.

''It was fantastic for Abby to get her debut at this level. She took some good ball and certainly did not shy away from the contest and was nice and confident in what she was doing,'' Piebenga said.

In the late game, Dunedin had a very comfortable 73-33

win over Eastern Waikato and should be too strong for Counties-Manukau in its only game today.
