Uni-Albion had occupied the top spot for the past three seasons, but this year Southern proved too good, claiming the title with a 66-48 win.
Southern dominated the competition all season and headed into the match as a strong favourite after a convincing win over College A in the semifinals.
However, the Uni-Albion players did not let Southern's formidable record faze them.
They started the game with a strong first quarter, playing at a fast and furious pace in attempt to gain early control of the match.
They managed to hold Southern for the first 15 minutes, finishing the quarter down by only one goal.
But Southern built on its lead early in the second quarter, capitalising off stolen rebounds and contact calls while defenders kept a stranglehold on Uni-Albion's shooting circle.
Uni-Albion midcourter Sophie Napper ran circles around the Southern defenders to find space in the heavily-guarded goal third, but the defending champion could not keep up its first-quarter pace.
Southern extended its lead to 12 goals, although some late shots for Uni-Albion reduced the difference to 10 at halftime.
Southern blazed ahead in the third quarter, moving the ball from the midcourt into shooter Te Paea Selby-Rickit at speed.
The team had stretched its lead to 54-33 by three-quarter time.
Injury time late in the final quarter gave Uni-Albion a few moments to regroup and the players came back out fighting.
They rallied to outscore Southern in the last 15 minutes, but did not have time to pull off a comeback win.
Earlier on Saturday, Southern B claimed third place by beating College A 48-45.
