Southern feeders had no trouble getting the ball into the circle, as the mobile Shearer pulled the Phys Ed defence with her and Selby-Rickit was left towering under the post for the easy shot.
At the other end, Phys Ed struggled for any clean passes into the circle as its shooters were both caught playing on the baseline.
At the first break, Southern led 17-11.
In the second quarter, Phys Ed adopted a more settled and slower pace to its game, which ensured ball remained in hand. However, without any heat to its attack game, it never looked likely to close the gap. At halftime, Southern remained in control at 29-22.
Both teams lifted the tempo in the third quarter, with Southern lengthening its through-court passes and Phys Ed's shooters adopting shorter, sharper moves into the circle.
At one point mid-way through the quarter, Phys Ed had reduced the gap to just four goals. However, Southern regained its composure and held a 43-35 lead into the final 15 minutes.
The last quarter was fast and dynamic and ended with both teams scoring 16 goals.
In other matches, University-Albion A dealt Southern B a lesson, winning 80-33, and College A held out a much improved Phys Ed B 49-41.
