But its mettle will be tested against the Northern Mystics which was the top New Zealand team in last year's ANZ championships in second place.
'We are a bit disappointed that we haven't won more games," co-coach Natalie Avellino said yesterday.
"The Mystics are a new challenge for us.
"We are coming up against tough opposition and we need to refine some things so we can put out a good performance against the Mystics at the weekend."
There were no injury problems in the Steel camp after the game against the Adelaide Thunderbirds last weekend.
"Everyone has pulled up very well after our Adelaide game," Avellino said. "That's a bonus for us."
The coach was non-committal about the chances of back-up shooter Te Paea Selby-Rickit getting a run against the Mystics.
"It is hard to say who will come on and get a run," Avellino said. "It depends on the game and how things are panning out and if we feel we need to make any changes."
The Steel now has three games at home and this should be a boost to its chances of adding to its wins.
"We are just worrying about each game as it comes and where we are on the ladder is no focus for us," Avellino said.
"The Central Pulse and a few other teams are on the same points as us. It is just a matter of how we play against the Mystics, rather than worrying where we are placed on the ladder. We are just taking it game by game."
The Southern Steel plays the Mystics at the Edgar Centre at 7.20pm on Sunday night. It is the second of three games scheduled in Dunedin in this year's ANZ championships.
