New combination will be key tonight

There is hardly a better place for Gina Crampton to help the Southern Steel get its season back on track.

Dunedin is the host for its first home match of 2018, against the Waikato Bay of Plenty Magic.

For Crampton, who has lived in Dunedin for the past eight years, that makes for a true home game.

The 26-year-old wing attack was excited for that, noting the Dunedin crowds last season had been ''really awesome''.

Knowing it could do better than the 62-51 loss to the Central Pulse, she said the side was determined to bounce back with a better performance.

It was in a good space, having been aware a second unbeaten season was unlikely.

The side had a different look to it this year and Crampton was one having to make a key new connection.

Having had the dominant Jhaniele Fowler-Reid to feed to for the past five years, she was developing a new combination with youngster Jennifer O'Connell.

It was always going to be a tough job filling Fowler-Reid's spot.

However, O'Connell was making a good impression so far.

''It's definitely very fresh, but Jen's been doing really well,'' Crampton said.

''We've done a lot of work together over the past couple of months.

''It is a bit different but I think we're all ready to prove that we weren't just the Jhaniele show and that we can play good netball without her.

''So it's quite a nice option for us if we can play with a bit more ball speed and a bit more movement around the circle, so there's always a positive in that.''

That new connection will be key tonight.

The Magic boasts a tall and impressive defensive duo in Casey Kopua and Kelly Jury.

For Crampton, that adds an extra challenge in getting the ball to her shooters and she knows she needs to bring her A-game.

''I guess we just have to adapt to what they bring on court.

''Obviously, they've got height in there and really good hands over the ball.

''So we're going to have to do a lot of work when we have ball in hand and just be sure of the ball that we're giving and that we're giving nice ball to our shooters.''

Being effective in doing that will not only help the Steel, but also press her claim for a recall to the Silver Ferns.

The wing attack had been arguably the biggest omission from the national side late last year and ultimately missed out on the Commonwealth Games.

Despite that, she was not going out to prove a point this season, her focus remaining on the Steel.

''I just want to play good netball and make sure I connect with the people around me and, hopefully, the results will come.''

The Magic also has strength in the shooting circle, key goal shoot Lenize Potgieter coming back from injury.
