Things have changed somewhat for Jane Watson since she last played in Invercargill.

On that night the 28-year-old was wearing a blue dress.

She was also celebrating winning the ANZ Premiership final and being presented with the league's player of the year award.

A week later the defender announced she was heading back north.

She returned to the Mainland Tactix, who she played for prior to moving to the Southern Steel in 2015.

Since then she has had a win and a loss - both 53-52 - against the Steel.

However, tonight will be her first time back on the Invercargill court.

She was pumped for the game and was expecting a vocal crowd.

Despite that, she did not buy into talk that playing her old team at her old home court would add extra motivation.

"It's not weird [playing the Steel], it's quite cool," she said.

"In most teams you know people already, so it's just more of that.

"Maybe just a little bit more banter, or a cheeky look at each other or what have you."

The match would be an important one for both teams.

For the Steel it is a chance to lock in a playoff spot, coming off an impressive 76-60 win over the Waikato Bay of Plenty Magic.

Meanwhile, for the Tactix a win would help maintain its narrow edge in third place.

That position was one few were picking the Tactix to be in, although the side has impressed in its best season in years.

Its defensive duo of Watson and Temalisi Fakahokotau have been particularly good and were key in the comeback win over the Steel in Dunedin.

Watson was finding the unit good to work with and had been enjoying her time back in Christchurch.

She said the set-up was different from how it had been and it was good to see the improvements.

"I guess it's becoming quite like a performance environment.

"Everyone's determined to be better and everyone's having those conversations with each other and demanding more of each other.

"People are actually speaking up and doing more and saying more for the team and the benefit of the team."

While there was no doubt where her loyalties for tonight were, she admitted there would always be some positive feeling towards the Steel.

"I miss the girls.

"I probably missed it more towards the start of the season.

"Now I'm feeling really at home at the Tactix, we've come a long way and it's starting to have a really good feeling.

"So yeah there will always be good feelings for the Steel, but happy to have made the change."
