Dunedin swimmer Fairweather 8th in final

It was always going to be a big ask for Erika Fairweather to back up last night's display.

The Dunedin swimmer clocked a time of 4min 08.01sec as she came in eighth in the 400m freestyle final today at the Tokyo Olympics.

The 17-year-old Kavanagh College pupil crushed her personal best by four seconds to clock a time of 4min 02.28sec last night to qualify fourth for the final.

Making the final in itself was a huge achievement for the Neptune swimmer.

It left her racing some of swimming's biggest names this afternoon.

Australian Ariarne Titmus delivered a superb display, finishing in 3min 56.69sec to take gold in a thriller over American favourite Katie Ledecky.

China's Bingjie Li came in four seconds behind Ledecky to claim bronze.

Fairweather races again at 10.05pm in the 200m freestyle, an event in which she is the reigning junior world champion.
