The four medals Drew Schievink won in Singapore will take pride of place on the display board at his home in Kaikorai.

Drew (12), a pupil at John McGlashan College, won four medals - three gold and a silver - at the Singapore Invitation Diving event early this month.

He was part of a six-strong New Zealand team that competed in the event against teams from Singapore, Chinese Macau and Uzbekistan.

Drew won the boys aged 13 and under 1m springboard dive with 264 points, the 3m (284 points) and the 5m platform (234 points). They were all personal best performances.

He teamed with a Uzbekistan diver in the synchronised 1m event and they won the silver medal.

The Uzbekistan diver spoke Russian and Drew English. They had a couple of training sessions together and communicated through hand signals.

Drew's best performance came in the platform when his arm stand scored between 7.5 and 8.5 points.

Drew had competed in Australia in the past but this was the first time he had contested a major international event.

''I enjoyed the experience,'' Drew said.

''It was quite hard and I saw it as a challenge. I was proud of my performances.''

Drew experimented with a new relaxation technique in Singapore and it helped him to perform at his best.

He played restful music through his headphones and it helped relax the nerves.

It was the first time he had competed in an outdoor diving pool.

Drew has been competing in diving for the past five years and his heroes in the sport are Tom Daley (Great Britain) who won a bronze medal in the 10m platform at the London Olympics and Liam Stone (Auckland), who is the top male diver in New Zealand.

He is coached by his mother, Trudy Schievink, who is one of the leading diving coaches in the country.
