Athletes, cyclists and swimmers were expected to land at Auckland Airport about 9am, including medal-winning Sarah Walker and Simon van Velthooven.
A couple of hours later a flight with all the gold medal-winning rowers, the two sailing winners and the majority of the team would land.
Most of the team was on a plane within 24 hours of the closing ceremony in London.
A few athletes have chosen to stay on in Europe for a holiday.
Sport New Zealand, formerly SPARC, said the London Olympics was New Zealand's best since Seoul in 1988, with 13 medals won, including six golds.
Next week at Hagley Park in Christchurch will be the official homecoming event for the team.
