Mountain biking: Four Otago riders named in New Zealand team

Four Otago riders have been named in the New Zealand team for the world championships in Norway in September.

The 28-strong New Zealand team includes 10 cross-country riders and eight downhill riders.

Headlining the cross-country team is Queenstown's Kate Fluker, who has also been picked to ride at the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow.

The other Otago riders named are Alanna Columb (Queenstown), in the elite women's downhill, and rising stars Josh McCombie (Dunedin) and Connor Sandri (Oamaru), in the under-19 downhill men's squad.

Star riders in the squad include Commonwealth Games representatives Karen Hanlen, Anton Cooper and Sam Gaze (cross-country), and world No 2 Sam Blenkinsop (downhill).

Cross-country and downhill competition will take place at Hafjell, with trials and cross-country eliminator racing taking place at Lillehammer, both alpine resorts that hosted the 1994 Winter Olympics.

Some of the New Zealand team have enjoyed considerable success at Hafjell since it joined the UCI world cup circuit in 2012.

Trek World Racing rider George Brannigan was runner-up in downhill at the world cup in 2012, while Blenkinsop (Lapierre International) was fourth last year, part of his consistent run in 2013.

Cooper finished second in the world cup at Hafjell in his under-23 debut in cross-country last year.

Cross-country competition begins with the team relay on September 3 followed by three days of individual racing. The downhill titles will be decided on September 7.
