Multisport: Wanaka pair in Kiwi team for 'wee adventure'

Wanaka multisporters Dougal Allan and Gavin Mason have joined forces with Auckland's Louise Marks to represent New Zealand in the Anaconda Adventure Race in Augusta, Western Australia, tomorrow.

The New Zealand team has been selected to race top Australian adventure racing trio Jarad Kohlar, Grant Suckling and Deanna Blegg in the transtasman championship during the race.

The race has 1600 entrants in various categories and consists of a 14.4km run, 1.9km ocean swim, 13km ocean kayak, 32km mountain bike and 2.5km run.

The New Zealanders are regarded as rising stars in the adventure race scene.

Allan and Marks placed second in their respective races at this year's Coast to Coast longest day event, while Mason has a string of podium finishes in other Otago events.

The fastest individuals are expected to complete the race in four hours. The New Zealanders are more used to 12-hour races.

On his return to Wanaka, Allan will prepare for the Abu Dhabi Adventure Challenge in December with compatriots Fleur Pawsey, Nathan Peterson and Stu Lynch, before beginning his next Coast to Coast campaign.

Mason described the race as a "wee adventure" in an email before the team left for Australia on Wednesday.
