A host of Kiwi athletes gunning for last-gasp selection for the London Olympics have all fallen short in their attempts at reaching the qualifying standard.
Rebecca Wardell's quest to compete in the heptathlon at the Games was defeated by an injured hamstring. She was to have a final effort in France over the weekend but, following a fitness test, ruled herself out after being unable to hurdle and managing to run at only 90 per cent.
In Belgium, Zane Robertson, attempting to run 3:35.50 to qualify in the 1500m, was seventh in 3:38.58. Robertson's twin brother Jake recorded 13:26.66 to finish 14th in the 5000m, outside the 13:20.00 he required for Olympic qualification.
Sprinter Monique Williams, in her last attempt to find the form that took her to the 2009 world championships semifinals, came up short in Germany and finished 1.17 seconds outside the qualifying time for the 200m.
At the same event, Tom Walsh was a metre down on his recent best with a throw of 18.30m, two metres shy of the required 20.30m for Olympic qualification in the shot put.
