Quinella double in doubles for dominant Dunstan

Dunstan double.

Dunstan Arm celebrated a stunning day four at the national rowing championships yesterday as it claimed nine podium finishes at Lake Karapiro.

Most impressive were the club’s efforts in snatching both gold and silver in the men’s and women’s senior double sculls.

Henry Clatworthy and Marley King-Smith, who starred for Wakatipu at Maadi Cup last year, won the men’s senior double sculls, finishing in 6min 43.12sec, ahead of club-mates Hamish Yeatman and Matt King, who claimed silver in 6min 46.49sec in the tight race.

It was a similar scenario in the women’s final.

Freddy Todhunter and Elsie Talbot earned top spot on the podium in of 7min 37.87sec, leading team-mates Stina Steffen and Olivia Key, who secured silver in 7min 41.32sec.

Todhunter and Talbot went on to add a silver to their tally in the women’s under-22 double sculls in the afternoon.

But Dunstan were not finished there.

Ruby Smith, Tahlia Nelson, Olivia Piebenga, and Paige Furrie grabbed silver in the women’s club coxless quad sculls.

They then joined Rebecca Kingan, Heather Breen, Olivia Bisset, Emer Bryant and Bella Breen to win bronze in the women’s club coxed eight.

Bella Breen teamed with Kate Spriggs to win bronze in the women’s intermediate double sculls and Angus Kenny and Jack Pearson took bronze in the men’s under-22 double sculls.

Oamaru also reached the podium in the novice grades yesterday.

The North Otago women’s novice coxed four of Hannah Burke, Bridget Spittle, Hanna Strachan, Marei Grebe and Henry Robinson club claimed silver as did the men’s novice coxed eight of Kouper Lynch, Ned Newlands-Carter, Jakob Rohrbach, Benna Webster, Kaitoro Walker, Lachlan Barry, Blake Taylor, Louis Belt and Greer Dickson.

Olympians Emma Twigg and Tom Mackintosh won the women’s and men’s premier single sculls titles.

The championships conclude today.
