Top New Zealand adaptive snowboarder Carl Murphy missed out on winning the first World Snowboardcross Race event, held at Cardrona Alpine Resort, yesterday.

Murphy, who snowboards with the aid of a prosthetic leg, was beaten by 2sec by Canadian rider Tyler Mosher.

The snowboarding event was raced down Cardrona's custom-built skier-X track, and Mosher won with a combined time of 75.99sec.

Murphy's two combined runs came to 78.25sec, enough to beat Ian Lockey, of Canada (78.66sec).

Competitors from five countries took part in the Slingshot Snowboardcross race, the premier event during the 2009 Adaptive Snow Sports Festival and National Championships.

The women's race was won by Bibian Mentel, of the Netherlands, in 77.88sec.

Second place went to Nicole Roundy, of the United States, who finished in 89.34sec, while Australian Jodie Thring was third, finishing in 1min 22.46sec.
