This is the estimate of the Summer Games director Aaron Joy.
''It would be $2 million at least,'' he told the Otago Daily Times.
Joy is an experienced events director and ran the New Zealand Masters Games in Dunedin for more than a decade. Joy spoke highly of the Edgar Centre that was the headquarters during the week of the Summer Games.
It was also the venue for four indoor sports: basketball, bocce, indoor bowls and powerlifting. The opening and closing ceremonies and the after-match social were also held there.
''The Edgar Centre has once again shown that it is a multi-events stadium,'' Joy said.
''It was also the main catering hub and the healthy athletes programme was held there.
''The Edgar Centre demonstrated what a valuable asset it is to the city for events like this.''
Joy also praised the University of Otago for allowing its Halls of Residence to be used to accommodate the visiting teams.
''It's the first time the Summer Games has been held in Dunedin and it's been a great event for the city.
''I'm really proud how the city has got behind it and produced 650 volunteers.''
Joy said the sports infrastructure in Dunedin, with facilities like the Edgar Centre, Moana Pool and the Caledonian Ground, was able to match the best in any city in the world.
''We've had very good feedback about our facilities from visitors,'' Joy said.
Joy particularly praised the volunteers concerned with transport.
''They worked from 7am in the morning to 9pm at night,'' he said.
A special feature of the Summer Games was that a number of the volunteers were management students at the university or the Otago Polytechnic.
''It has given them practical experience,'' Joy said.
''They have experienced a baptism of fire.
''It has been a lot of work but I'm sure it has brought big rewards for everyone.''
Joy said there were additional items to organise, compared to running the New Zealand Masters Games.
''We have had to organise the transportation, catering and accommodation for the teams,'' he said.
''It is our job to control everything from when they arrive in the city until they leave.''
Joy praised the contribution of key staff like games services manager Caroline Walker, Tammy Jackman and Suzie Townsend.
