Dunedin used to be the powerhouse of New Zealand synchronised swimming but the pendulum has shifted and Southland's Anderson sisters now dominate the sport.
They proved it again at the South Island championships at Moana Pool over the weekend when Kirstin (21) won the open solo events and Caitlin (17) was runner-up.
They teamed up to win the duet.
The sisters, from the Phoenix Club in Invercargill, have filled the vacuum at the top of the sport in New Zealand since the retirement of Dunedin's Daniels sisters after the Beijing Olympic Games.
Kirstin and Caitlin were inspired to work hard at the sport by the Daniels, who won a bronze medal in the duet at the Melbourne Commonwealth Games in 2006 and competed at the Beijing Olympics.
The Andersons filled the top two spots in the open solo at the New Zealand championships in Wellington in March and won the duet.
They made their mark internationally at the Oceania championships in Samoa last week when Kirstin won a gold medal in the open solo and Caitlin was second.
They also won gold in the duet.
Kirstin, a student at the Southland Polytechnic, competed at the world championships in Rome last year.
She demonstrated her skills by winning the open technical solo event and the free routine at Moana Pool at the weekend.
Caitlin, a pupil at Southland Girls High School, was second in both events.
Kirstin scored 78.1 marks in both the technical and the free solo events and her sister 75.2.
The sisters won the open duet with a score of 76.5 in the technical event and 76.6 in the free duet.
The best Dunedin performance came from Columba College pupils Momoka Matsubara-Park (12) and her younger sister, Rika, who filled the top two places at the intermediate schools solo event with well executed technical and figures routine.
Momoka scored 57.5 and Rika 54.24 points.
Third place went to Caitlyn McMillan (Balmacewen Intermediate) with 48.5 points.
St Hildas won the secondary schools combination routine with 44.3 points.
The Dolphin team from Dunedin suffered a time penalty in the beginners' event and finished second with 47.20 points behind the Phoenix team that scored 48 points.
