A change of plans in response to the Covid-19 pandemic led to Southland trainer Robert Dennis scoring his first stakes success with Out Of The Park in the South Island Thoroughbred Breeders’ Stakes at Riccarton on Saturday.

The Ocean Park 5yr-old showed her track record-breaking run in her last start at Wingatui was no fluke when powering between runners to win the group 3 1600m feature.

It was the first listed or group race win for both Dennis and rider Krishna Mudhoo.

"I was pretty confident she had held on although it was desperately close," Dennis told NZ Racing Desk

Out Of The Park has been a revelation in the South after transferring to Dennis’ stable.

The mare was to have headed to next month’s listed Riverton Cup but those plans changed.

"When this Covid-19 situation started to get pretty serious we thought it might be better to try for something a little sooner so we had a look around and settled on this race," Dennis said.
