Racing: Best training day for Kerry King at Riverton

• Kerry King, the Isla Bank trainer, had a personal best when she prepared the winners of four of the first five races at the Winton meeting at Riverton yesterday.

Amberley jockey Chris Johnson rode three of the winners, Tap `N' Gold, Gold Tap and Caw.

Jay Misbah, the Wingatui apprentice, rode the other, High Seas.

King started seven runners at the meeting.

Tap `N' Gold, Gold Tap and Caw are raced by their Isla Bank breeder, Ian Taplin, partner of King.

Tap `N' Gold and Gold Tap are by Bunker, who stands at the Tapildo Lodge of Taplin.

Tap `N' Gold is the first winner sired by Bunker.

Bunker (Sandtrap-Perfect) won four races, including the Bayer Classic, Hawkes Bay Guineas and Ryder Stakes in 2002 from the Takanini stable of Trevor and Stephen McKee.

Trevor McKee raced Bunker with Ian Taplin and his father Syd.

• Esther Black, the Washdyke owner-trainer, had her second success when Estrela De Africa won a maiden 1400m by eight and a-quarter lengths yesterday.

Black trained her first winner, Tenko, at Hokitika in March, when the horse was having her first start for her.

Black, originally from Scotland, has an equestrian background. Her grandfather trained horses in Scotland. She came to New Zealand as a groom with the Scottish polo team and returned to live here 12 years ago. She has also been involved in hunting.

Black races Estrela De Africa with her husband, Tim, a wool representative for Elders, and a group of friends.

They bought the Pyrus 4yr-old mare from the North Island six months ago, after she had six unplaced starts.

• Christchurch apprentice Izuan Khairil was suspended from Sunday until Saturday week inclusive after he admitted failing to ride out Sweet About Me in race 8 at the Winton meeting yesterday.

Khairil was observed to relax his ride over the concluding stages and was beaten a short neck out of third place.

Jarrod Todd was not injured when he was dislodged from Miss Fairweather in race 8, after the horse clipped a heel when hampered shortly after the start.
