Hi Gun, the winner of this year's winter claimers' final at Forbury Park, has been retired - for now.

The 10yr-old son of Washington VC bled following his 10th at Forbury Park on August 29. It was the second occasion he had bled in a race.

Hi Gun would be subject to a mandatory three-month stand-down but his Roxburgh co-trainer, Geoff Knight, told stewards at Winton yesterday it was intended the gelding would be retired.

Jonny Turner, who owns the horse with his father, John, and the Monday Knight Syndicate has not completely ruled out a return to racing for Hi Gun, who was retired in June last year after his first bleeding incident and came back to win three of his eight starts as a 9yr-old, including the claimers' final in late June.

''We'll see what happens next claimers' series, but he's definitely out for a good break now,'' Turner said.

Hi Gun's training regime included some hunting and jumping and his future may lie in a new equestrian endeavour over the jumps.

''The stable girl is taking him to some shows so that might be his new career.''

Hi Gun made his debut as a 4yr-old at Gore in November 2007 - a first-up run that Turner will never forget.

''He was the first horse I ever had and he lined up in his first race and won by 10 lengths,'' he said.

''You can't ask for much better than that with your first horse.''

The third foal of Holmes Daughter won nine of his 61 starts in seven seasons of racing, earning $71,893 in stakes.
