Racing: Jay Bees Grin shows readiness to resume

Jay Bees Grin is set to resume racing at Addington on February 24 after a brilliant trial win at Motukarara yesterday.

Jay Bees Grin, the winner of three of his four starts, has not raced since he won easily at Addington on November 11.

The 3yr-old, who has been gelded, won his trial by eight lengths yesterday in a sharp 2.44 for 2200m (mobile), the last 800m in 56.4 and 400 in 26.4.

"He did go well and he usually takes two or three runs back from a break," David Moore, his Darfield trainer, said.

Jay Bees Grin ran second to Franco Nullabour in a work-out at Addington on January 30, an effort that took on value when the latter won at Addington last Saturday.

Moore said Jay Bees Grin was a lot more settled at home since being gelded.

Mighty Spark qualified 11sec inside the required time when he recorded 3.00 for 2400m (mobile) at Winton yesterday.

The Julius Caesar-Vera's Moon 3yr-old colt is trained by Kirk Larsen.

Trainer Phil Burrows has decided to wait for a penalty-free race at Addington next Thursday with Excuse Maker, rather than contest the Waikouaiti Cup on Sunday. Excuse Maker has won his past three starts including the Oamaru and Amberley Cups.

"The race at Addington is the easier option and gives him more time to recover from his Amberley Cup race," Burrows said.

Burrows qualified 2yr-old filly Pacific Rapture yesterday. The daughter of Bettor's Delight-Seamoon is in a $25,000 sales series race at Addington next Thursday.

The New Zealand TAB has suspended betting on the Interdominion until a decision has been made about a start for Auckland Reactor.

His owners are awaiting the result of a blood test to determine how he has recovered from the Hunter Cup last Saturday when he finished a close second to Choise Achiever.

The appeal against the disqualification of Smoken Up from the Interdominion final in Auckland last April and the fine imposed on his trainer Lance Justice was heard in Wellington on Tuesday.

Catherine Hutton, the executive officer of the Judicial Control Authority, said she had not been advised of an outome. Sir John Hansen and Murray McKechnie heard the appeal.

The owners of Smoken Up forfeited a $400,000 stake with the disqualification. Justice was fined $3500 and ordered to pay $32,529 costs.
