Don't Say Clang gave his Riccarton trainer Terri Rae confidence to pursue middle distance opportunities in the North Island with his win in the Winter Classic (2000m) on Saturday.

"He will go out for a week and then we will look at races in the North Island," Rae said.

"We wanted to see how he would handle the 2000m."

Don't Say Clang, winner of seven races to 1600m, had raced once previously over 2000m for an eighth in the Canterbury Gold Cup in May.

Rae, the top strike rate trainer for New Zealand last season, races the Clang 6yr-old with her partner, Matt Shepherd.

Rae also won the 3yr-old race on the first day of the National meeting with Ishiabeel.

She prepares First Ruler, a leading contender for the spring 3yr-old races in Canterbury after an impressive win at Oamaru last month.

Isaac Lupton was suspended until midnight next Saturday for careless riding.

Lupton, the rider of Mickey in the hurdles, was found to have tightened Texas at the 2400m.

Smeagol had filling in a foreleg after the race and Come On Jimmy had a laceration to a knee.

Masa Tanaka was suspended until midnight next Saturday when he admitted careless riding in race 6.

Tanaka, the rider of Zak's Choice, shifted in and caused a check to Old Boys at the 1300m.

Phillip Turner, the rider of Mikemeandaad in the Grand National Steeplechase, was fined $500 after admitting excessive use of the whip.
