Wet-track form may tell with 2yr-olds

Strong wet-track form looks to have given the three leading hopes in tomorrow's listed Champagne Stakes at Riccarton a major leg-up.

Leading fancies Secret Allure, Peaceful and Khimar War would be standout picks in any conditions the 1200m feature was run in.

But the prospect of a wet track looks only to have strengthened their chances.

Awapuni filly Secret Allure was impressive in winning in slow conditions at Te Rapa two starts ago. She then disappointed in her next start on a good track at Trentham, confirming to her trainer that she needs easing in the ground to be seen at her best.

"She was getting home nicely that day, but I just think the track was a touch too firm for her," Lisa Latta said.

Latta's main concern for the race tomorrow is her filly's draw.

"I'm a little bit concerned about her draw [barrier 2] because she's always going to get back and be getting home late, but I expect her to run very well."

In early markets, bookmakers had Secret Allure as a $4.20 second-equal favourite with Canterbury colt Khimar War.

The Murray Baker and Andrew Forsman-trained Peaceful headed the race market at $3.70.

The filly has a massive tick beside her name, having ploughed through a heavy10 Matamata track in a huge performance for second last month.

She produced a long and sustained finish out wide after giving her rivals a headstart with a blundering exit from the gates.

Leading Southern hope Khimar War ran third on a soft track in his first start on
March 24 and is expected to cope with rain-affected conditions.

"He is better on top of the ground, but he does not mind a bit of cut in the track," Riccarton trainer Lance Robinson said.

In his next start on April 21, the horse then produced an impressive and professional win on a dead-rated track at Riccarton.

Robinson has a dual-pronged attack on tomorrow's $50,000 race, as he will also line up Norma Jean.

Though bookmakers have her at a win dividend almost $20 more than her stablemate, Khimar War, there was not a huge difference in ability, Robinson said.

"I think a lot of her. She is not that far behind him."
