The famous names that make up Wingatui racecourse's rich history are to be commemorated at the track.
The Otago Racing Club is building a memorial wall to recognise people, who have since died, for their contribution to local racing.
Plaques with iconic surnames such as Anderton, Didham and Brown will be mounted on a wall outside the course's Winning Post lounge.
The project is being spearheaded by long-serving committee member Fred King.
The idea for the memorial came after the club discussed how best it could use money it had been bequeathed.
That money would fund the bulk of the project, while the rest of the funding for the wall and surrounding garden area was coming through donations from families who wished to have their relatives honoured on the wall, King said.
''Wingatui is quite unique in that in other towns there are not a lot of the old names around that have been in the industry for a long time,'' he said.
The club has already received a strong response from families who have registered their interest in the project and it is welcoming more inquiries from people who wish to recognise their relatives.
Descendants of Wallis and Brown family members who will feature on the wall have donated plants and other materials to establish a surrounding garden.
The wall and the remodelling of its surrounds is to be completed by the club's Champions raceday in March, when an official opening will be held.
''I think by that time we will have about 30 plaques on the wall for opening day,'' King said.
