Rowing: Otago pair gain bronze medals

Otago rowers Zoe McBride and Johannah Kearney have claimed bronze medals at the world senior and junior championships in Plovdiv, Bulgaria.

McBride, Nathalie Hill, Ruby Tew and Hannah Osborne were third in the junior women's quadruple scull.

The Romanian crew dominated the race, but the battle for the minor placings was intense.

The New Zealanders were in third by the 500m mark, just 1sec down the United States and less than 1sec ahead of the Germans.

Over the last 1000m, McBride's crew pulled clear of the Germans and kept close to the Americans to claim bronze.

Oamaru rower Kearney teamed with Kelsi Walters, Sophie Shingleton and Holly Greenslade in the women's junior four.

The New Zealanders took the lead early in a top-class field, but could not contain the Chinese boat or the United States.

With Italy pressing in fourth, the New Zealand crew hung on to the Americans for as long as it could and held off the Italians for a fine third place.

Lucy Strack, from Dunedin's North End club, has qualified for the A final of the elite women's lightweight single sculls.

Strack will face tough opposition from Greece, Denmark, the United States, Austria and Belarusia, after coming home third in her semifinal.

A fourth place in their semifinal eliminated Dunedin's Alistair Bond and Armin Svoboda from the A final of the elite lightweight pair event, forcing them to a B final race.

Fourth early on, they fought their way into a qualifying third place but were beaten on the line - by just 0.04sec - by Serbians Nenad Babovic and Milos Tomic.

New Zealand picked up gold on finals day through the junior men's coxed four of Thomas Murray, Michael Brake, Cameron Webster, Thomas Jenkins and Sam Bosworth.

The New Zealanders had demonstrated their intent earlier in the regatta with a dominant heat, and dominated the final to win by nearly 2sec from Germany.
