In spite of hanging up his rugby boots last year after playing 100 games for the Zingari-Richmond Rugby Club, Andrew Melville is still giving back to the sport and his home club as the new premier coach.

The former No 8, who started playing rugby at the age of 5, grew up playing for Zingari-Richmond.

''I always wanted to coach the Zingari prems, so when the opportunity arose I couldn't say no. I am really enjoying it.

''We've got a few things to work on but hopefully we can secure a couple of wins this season,'' he said.

Melville received a big break when he was 19 and was offered a place on the County Carlow Football Club team in Ireland.

He played 12 seasons for the side before he came back to Dunedin and Zingari.

''I was 19 and I just wanted to play rugby overseas. They kept wanting me back, so I stayed. I was enjoying my lifestyle playing rugby as a job,'' he said.

Melville, who played senior rugby from 18 to 40, said the highlight of his career was when he played for the German Presidents against the Barbarians for their 150th celebrations in 2001.

''That was a great game and it's something I will always remember,'' he said.

Club loyalty is important, Melville said.

''My aunty and grandfather played for Zingari. That's part of the reason why I played last season, to . . . . [reach] that 100 game achievement.

''Club loyalty is important. A lot of kids nowadays jump from club to club chasing honours. You find your club which suits you and you stick with it.

''You get a lot more out of that than what you would do jumping from club to club,'' he said.

The Taieri Eels will play the Zingari-Richmond Dragons this weekend.
