Defending champions Southern beaten

Club rugby is shaping as a topsy-turvy season with some surprising results in the opening round.

The defending champions Southern went down 33-29 to Green Island at Bathgate Park this afternoon.

Southern was out muscled in the opening 40 minutes and trailed 30-3 at the break. But it poached two bonus points from the game with three tries in the last five minutes.

Harbour were also upset at home at Watson Park, with Zingari-Richmond winning 25-15.

Dunedin bucked the trend with a comfortable 34-3 win against Alhambra-Union at Kettle Park, while on Friday night University beat Kaikorai 41-25.
