The Otago Spirit has gained back three key players for its most important game of the year.

Zoe Whatarau, Liv Waldron and Tegan Hollows had been set to miss the Farah Palmer Cup championship division final against Bay of Plenty on Saturday, due to university exams.

However, a special exemption was granted yesterday, allowing the trio to do their exams and play in the final.

In what Spirit assistant coach Warren Kearney called a ''good solution'', the players would be able to sit their exams in Tauranga on Friday night.

A room would be made available and a supervisor would oversee them.

Kearney said the trio was happy with the outcome, although it would be a pressure-filled weekend.

''I think they're happy they can obviously do both.

''But I think the pressure comes on them a wee bit, because they still want to get good marks to finish the year, which is their priority first.

''But at the same time they're trying not to let the rugby excitement take over them.

''I know they've been working hard the past few days to get that [exemption] through, which has probably put a bit of pressure on their study hours, but they've got to get back into it now.''

Kearney said the team had understood the policy and benchmarks the university set and had to uphold for exemptions.

However, Whatarau put a case forward on the players' behalf for special exemption, which was granted as the university overturned its original decision.

A big part of that had been the opportunity to play at the pinnacle of representative rugby in New Zealand, one step below the Black Ferns.

There would also be Black Ferns coaches and selectors present, which exposed them to even greater opportunities.

The team was happy to have the players back and was training well as it prepared for Saturday's game.

''They're always a pretty joyful group of young ladies. They're excited - they know it all comes down to one game,'' Kearney said.

''We've already played Bay [of Plenty] so we know what they're like. They beat us down here, so it's all game on.''
