Ben Smith wanted to play for the Highlanders against the British and Irish Lions but his country called.
Smith (30) revealed yesterday he had a clause in his new contract to take on the Lions but he wanted to play for the All Blacks because representing his country was the pinnacle.
"I would have really wanted to play for the Highlanders if it was possible but a game has been scheduled and if selected then that is what I have to do."
"Looking back at the time there was no game scheduled in so I thought it would be possible to play for both," Smith said.
"But things have changed now.
"I just want to get out there and play my best footy now."
The All Blacks scheduled a test match earlier this month, against Samoa in Auckland on June 16. The Highlanders are set to play the Lions at Forsyth Barr Stadium on June 13 making it impossible for Smith to play both.
The All Blacks go into camp right after the Crusaders match against the Lions on June 10. Though disappointed, Smith was keenly focused on playing.
The fullback will play his 127th match for the Highlanders tonight, equalling the record set by hooker Anton Oliver.
It was just another game for Smith, who was not a game counter.
"I have just been concentrating this week about getting back into things.
"The three weeks [off] I have just managed to get a bit of training in while the boys have been away.
"Now I’m looking forward to getting back and playing rugby.
"It does not really mean much to me.
"You never know when it is going to be your last so you treasure every one."
Smith tore a ligament in his left ankle against the Stormers on April 28 and missed the three-week trip to South Africa and Australia.
