Highlanders interim coach Mark Hammett praised the Highlanders’ tenacity and courage in last night’s win over the Hurricanes.

"It was superb. We talked about it during the week, and the way we organised the week to have real clarity and energy in the way we were playing," he said.

"We wanted to play, and play high tempo. I think that try just before halftime, I think it was 44 minutes when we dotted down, showed the intention of what we wanted to do.

"In the second half we built through our defence and our attacking mindset and that was great. It is really pleasing how our attack has been and how this three week block has gone."

Hammett praised the accuracy of his side in the second half.

"I thought our lineout defence was superb tonight ... in the second half I thought we adjusted and had good line speed and put pressure on their ball carriers.

"When we play quick, we put pressure on teams."

Lock Tom Franklin won praise for his performance, Hammett saying it was probably the lock’s best effort in the Highlanders jersey.

The side now has a 10-day break and will come back together on June 13 to begin preparing for the match against the French Barbarians on June 22.

Hurricanes coach Chris Boyd said the Highlanders got momentum in the second half and his side struggled to get much ball.

"The Highlanders were really efficient when they had the ball and we battled to either pinch it ... in the end we started playing catch-up football and it blew out more than it should have," Boyd said.

"The boys are devastated. We’ve had three pretty patchy performances and we know it is not good enough and we need to regroup quickly and get back into it."

He could not put the poor recent efforts to any one thing but it was different facets and the side had to get more accurate and clinical.
