Pirates club halts decline

You might say it was a financial term of two halves for Pirates Rugby Football Club.

The Dunedin club was facing a $20,000 shortfall but played a blinder in the second half.

The predicted deficit dissolved and a reasonable profit popped up instead.

The 137-year-old Hancock Park-based club reported a $23,000 surplus for the financial period ending September 1 at its annual meeting on Sunday.

Committee member and former chairman Kelvin Trainor put the turnaround down to motivated club members.

"I think it comes down to motivated people," he said.

"We are getting good support from people who have not been around for a few years and the junior club is very strong. They’ve got a lot of momentum.

"And Caversham AFC are using our facilities and they have quite few senior teams so that [helps]."

In April, Trainor told the Otago Daily Times the club needed to generate more income or it would eventually have to fold. The club did not field a men’s side last season.

He suggested the solution appeared to be forging a more formal relationship with the Caversham Association Football Club.

The clubs have had a memorandum of understanding since May, 2018 which is up for renewal in May.

Macandrew Netball Club also use the facilities at Hancock Park.

"That is going well. We are trying to create a sports hub and we are working in with the Pirates Squash Club next
door.

"All the committee positions have been filled and that is a first for a couple of years.

"We’ve got [a senior] women’s team for next year and we are looking at getting a men’s team."

That team would likely compete in the senior grade.

Pirates pulled out of the Dunedin premier rugby club competition at the beginning of the 2017 season and its premier 2 team dropped out grade last season.

Tony Kramers has taken over as chairman from Trainor.
