Rugby: Blake only Otago player named in NZ colts squad

Dunedin flanker Hugh Blake is the sole Otago representative in the New Zealand colts team.

The squad, named by coach Rob Penney after a camp in Palmerston North on Saturday, will head to South Africa next month to defend its world under-20 championship.

Blake is coming off a tremendous 2011 season for the Sharks, and has been contracted by Otago.

The openside flanker made the cut of 28 from the initial colts squad of 46. Fellow Otago flanker Solomon T-Pole (Pirates) missed out.

Otago also supplied just one player, Blake's clubmate and Otago halfback in waiting Brad Weber, to the colts last year.

Southland has three players in the team: first five-eighth Scott Eade, utility back Marty McKenzie and prop Tuki Raimona.

Others selected include former Otago Boys' High School lock Joe Latta (Wellington) and Taniela Manu, the younger brother of Highlanders No 8 Nasi Manu.

Penney said the final trial game gave him "a lot to think about".

"I'm really happy with the squad we have selected with a lot of young men putting their hands up for national team honours.

"We're really excited about heading to South Africa now to defend our title."
