Rugby: Century 'really something special'

Ben Pereira reached his century last Saturday after a decade playing rugby for Alhambra-Union.

But his first game against Southern does not register with him because he was called in from the colts to help out.

The first premier game Pereira (29), a Dunedin personal trainer at Absolute Health and Fitness, remembers was against Harbour in 2004 on a cold and wet day at Watson Park with the rain blowing in off the harbour.

''The club told me that my first game was against Southern,'' Pereira said.

''But I don't remember that game.''

At the time, reaching 100 games was not on his radar. He had played for the Wairarapa College First XV for three years and was a student at the Sports Institute of Otago.

''I didn't think about playing 100 games for any club. It wasn't something that stood out for me,'' he said.

Reaching the ton did not become important for Pereira until he left Dunedin to work in Wellington two years ago.

He had played 85 games at that time and he thought that he was getting close. He wasn't playing rugby in Wellington and the lure of reaching 100 games for Alhambra-Union was the spur he needed to return to Dunedin.

''I decided I wanted to come back down here and play again,'' Pereira said.

''I came back for some games last year and got closer to my 100.''

Reaching the target against Harbour last Saturday means a lot to Pereira.

''It didn't hit home until Tuesday after training when nobody could remember the last time that somebody had got 100 games for Alhambra-Union,'' Pereira said.

''I thought about the number of training sessions I'd been to, the number of games I'd played, the hours I'd put in, and the people I've met through the game who are still good friends.

''That was when it dawned on me that it was really something special.''

Pereira played against his toughest opponent, Pete Mirrielees, when Alhambra-Union lost to Harbour 27-13 at North Ground last Saturday.

''I met Pete when I moved to Dunedin in 2003 and we played some representative age-group rugby together. He stayed around at our club to celebrate with me well after the game on Saturday.''

The toughest teams Pereira has played against are Harbour at Watson Park and Southern at Bathgate Park.

''It's like running into a brick wall when you get tackled at their home grounds,'' Pereira said.

His biggest highlight was to be in the Alhambra-Union teams that won premier banners in 2006 and 2008.

Pereira is a lively and mobile hooker who knows how to score tries. He has played for Alhambra-Union since 2004 but the try-scoring exploits of the hooker did not begin until 2007.

His record is: 2007 (4 tries), 2008 (11), 2009 (1), 2010 (8), 2011 (7), 2012 (8), 2014 (3).

His proudest moment was scoring four tries against Southern in 2008, the year Alhambra-Union won the banner.

Southern won that game but Pereira had the satisfaction of scoring more tries than the entire Southern team, which scored three.

Pereira has not made any commitments for next winter, ''I'll still be in Dunedin and Alhambra-Union will always be my club but I haven't made any decisions yet.

''We have a young team and are punching above our weight at the moment.''
