Rugby: Composure needed, Martin says

The axe has swung through the Otago team, with 10 changes to the side which takes on Tasman in Nelson tomorrow afternoon.

Otago coach Steve Martin has been brutal in his selections this week, dumping those who failed to deliver in the side's loss to Bay of Plenty last week.

Martin will be looking for more control from his side, and a more aggressive defence.

The side lacked composure and made some basic errors in last week's 20-31 loss, and Otago desperately needs the win after suffering two straight losses.

Changes have been made to the axis of the side, with Paul Grant starting at No 8, Sean Romans replacing Toby Morland at halfback, and Daniel Bowden moving in one from second five-eighth, in place of Chris Noakes, to wear the No 10 jersey.

Grant replaces Steven Setephano, who has been bothered by an ankle injury this week but will sit on the bench after making it through training yesterday.

South African Eben Joubert will make his starting debut for Otago at openside flanker, after impressing when he has come on in the past few weeks.

Joubert is a fetcher, and a more traditional openside, and his ability at the breakdown should greatly aid the Otago game.

Otago has been exposed at the breakdown, as other teams have successfully slowed its ball down.

Captain Craig Newby shifts to the more familiar blindside role.

Lock Tom Donnelly has a niggly hamstring and is replaced by Uili Kolo'ofai, who makes his first start for Otago this season.

It was to be Donnelly's 50th match in Otago colours but he could not overcome the injury, which has been troubling him since the later stages of Super 14.

Hooker Jason Macdonald returns after two weeks of warming the bench, swapping with Peter Mirrielees.

Aaron Bancroft moves in a position from centre, while Brett Mather is outside him, after overcoming a finger injury which caused him miss last week's game.

Karne Hesketh comes into the wing for Lucky Mulipola, who moves to the bench.

Martin said some of the changes were brought about because of injuries but there was a need for a change in the role of the key decision-makers to get Otago into the game early.

Otago had failed to do that last week, and found itself 24 points down by half-time.

Martin acknowledged there was not a lot of experience among some of the new players, but if the more experienced squad members were not doing the job then the new players, who had trained all year with the squad, had to be given a chance.

He hoped Joubert would help the side at the breakdown, an area Martin said Otago was struggling in.

Though Otago had made plenty of changes, Tasman had the rare luxury of naming an unchanged team.

Coach Todd Blackadder has retained the side which beat Northland 31-10 in Whangarei last Saturday.

Tasman sits one place above Otago in the Air New Zealand Cup in seventh place.
