Rugby: Cup crossover matches a tough task for Otago Rugby

The Otago rugby team has been given a tough assignment in its four crossover matches in next year's ITM Cup competition.

Otago will play home matches against Canterbury and Southland at Dunedin and away games against Waikato and Auckland.

Otago Rugby Football Union chief executive Richard Reid told the Otago Daily Times that Otago chose Southland with its first choice and Auckland in its second choice.

But there was virtually no choice for the Auckland game.

"We had the last choice and Auckland was the only team left," Reid said.

There is the possibility that the Canterbury game will be the last first-class game played at Carisbrook and the Southland game the first in the Forsyth Barr Stadium.

The ITM Cup will be split into two sections next season - the premiership for the top seven teams from this year, and the championship for the bottom seven teams.

The 14 teams selected their opponents in three of the four "crossover" matches, where first-tier premiership teams play against second-tier championship teams in the new format.

All provinces will play every other team within their tier (three home, three away matches), as well as four crossover matches that carry full competition points.

The first round of the crossover matches was automatically determined on seedings after this season, while the other crossover matches for each province were decided yesterday.

Because of the Rugby World Cup, the ITM Cup will be played in a condensed eight-week window in July-August next year, with no semi-finals.

The team that finishes bottom in the premiership will be relegated to the championship in 2012. The top team in the championship will gain automatic promotion to the premiership.

The competition will resume its standard format with semifinals and finals for both the premiership and championship in 2012.

Automatic crossover matches pre-determined by seeding:
• Otago v Canterbury (14 v 1), Manawatu v Waikato (13 v 2), Tasman v Auckland (12 v 3), North Harbour v Wellington (11 v 4), Northland v Taranaki (10 v 5), Counties Manukau v Bay of Plenty (9 v 6), Hawkes Bay v Southland (8 v 7).

First round of crossover matches:

Championship teams - playing at home - selected a premiership opponent in reverse seeding order (14 through to eight).

• Otago v Southland, Manawatu v Taranaki, Tasman v Canterbury, North Harbour v Auckland, Northland v Bay of Plenty, Counties Manukau v Waikato, Hawkes Bay v Wellington.

Second round of crossover matches:

Premiership teams - playing at home - selected a championship team in seeding order (one through to seven).

• Canterbury v Northland, Waikato v Otago, Auckland v Counties Manukau, Wellington v Manawatu, Taranaki v Tasman, Bay of Plenty v Hawkes Bay, Southland v North Harbour.

Third round of crossover matches:

Championship teams - playing away - selected a premiership team in seeding order (eight through to 14).

• Taranaki v Hawkes Bay, Southland v Counties Manukau, Wellington v Northland, Bay of Plenty v North Harbour, Waikato v Tasman, Canterbury v Manawatu, Auckland v Otago.
