Rugby: Hooker free to play after ban reduced

Heriot hooker Fraser Fletcher has had his ban reduced from four weeks to one week and will play tomorrow against Owaka.

Fletcher was dismissed on May 8, in the match against Clutha Valley, for stomping on a player's head. He was banned at a hearing straight after the game for four weeks.

Fletcher appealed the ban and at a hearing on Tuesday night in Dunedin, which had been adjourned from the previous week, the appeals committee ruled the ban would be reduced to one week.

The appeals hearing, chaired by Pat O'Dea, ruled that it was more probable Fletcher did not deliberately stomp on the player's head, although there was an element of carelessness.

Fletcher had never been sin-binned or sent off previously, which was taken into account when the appeals committee decided on the one-week penalty.

Fletcher had already stood down for a week, so he will be able to play tomorrow.
