Rugby: Junior tournament hosts 91 teams

The rain has stopped and the fields are drying out for the annual Taieri junior seven-a-side tournament to be played at Peter Johnstone Park on Monday.

Taieri Rugby Football Club primary chairman Brent Varcoe said heavy rain last week had not made the grounds too wet, and he was expecting plenty of action on Monday.

There will be 91 teams in the tournament on Monday, mainly from Dunedin, though there are also sides from as far afield as Roxburgh and Alexandra, and Clutha in South Otago.

There are five more teams than last year in the tournament, which is in its 49th year.

It has only been cancelled once because of bad weather, and although the forecast for Monday was not too promising, Varcoe said the tournament would definitely go ahead.

With the 50th event up next year, the Taieri club would discuss with the Otago Rugby Football Union ways to celebrate the special birthday.

Each team is guaranteed three games, with the first games kicking off at 10am. Finals will be played between 2pm and 3pm, and Otago senior players will present the trophies.
