Rugby: Prop confident shoulder will be right

Otago prop Keith Cameron dislocated his shoulder in a game on Sunday but should be right for the representative season.

Cameron (32) was in a scrum for his Dunedin club side against Harbour when it collapsed.

"It sort of all came down on me and my head went one way while my shoulder went the other," he said.

His left shoulder came out of its socket and was dislocated.

He left the field and was taken to Dunedin Hospital, where the shoulder was examined and then put back into its socket.

Cameron said he was now in the mending process and though it was unclear when he would get back on to the field he hoped it would be in about a month.

He was confident of being available for Otago.

He would rest the injury for a couple of weeks and then start some strengthening work.

His shoulder would be in a sling for at least the next week, helping the ligaments heal.

X-rays showed there were no broken bones.

Cameron had not injured the shoulder before and was waiting to see a specialist next week.

Cameron, who mainly plays on the loosehead side, has played 37 games for Otago.

Last year, he took on the job as scrummaging coach for the union and the Highlanders, but his work with the franchise was scaled down this year after NZRU scrummaging coach Mike Cron came on board.

Cameron said he was keen to get back on to the playing paddock, but was still doing some work with younger props at school level, and in the academy.

Otago propping stocks are not deep so it will be hoped Cameron's injury is not too serious.

Last year's starting loosehead prop, Ben Nolan, is back playing for Harbour after moving to Australia at the end of last season.

Tighthead prop Sam Hibbard has returned to the field in the past couple of weeks after a hernia operation, while veteran Kees Meeuws is continuing to front up for Southern.

Otago's first game in the ITM Cup is against Counties-Manukau at Pukekohe on July 31.
