Rugby: Second-half surge for Varsity

University A brought spark and style into its game in the second spell to run Alhambra-Union into the North Ground.

The students led 14-10 at halftime, before piling on five tries and 36 points in the second spell.

University had control of the the set pieces with its dominance of the scrums and the lineout, with locks Rob Verbakel and Josh Dickson and No 8 Paul Grant supplying controlled ball.

Grant made strong bursts with the ball in hand and scored two tries and Sam Sturgess was a mobile hooker.

Halfback Nick Annear delivered quick ball and was nippy in close quarters and scored two tries.

He teamed efficiently with first five-eighth Guy Schwikkard, who gave creative control to the backline.

Midfield back Peter Breen was the best Alhambra-Union player and scored 12 points. Two late tries gave some respectability to their score.
