The Dunedin City Council is reviewing the maintenance contracts for the city's sports fields, including the University Oval international cricket ground.
Council parks, recreation and aquatics group manager Richard Saunders said the green space contracts would expire on June 30 and the timing was right for a review.
There will be some changes.
The city has been divided into a North and a South area and those contracts have been tendered separately.
The maintenance contract at the University Oval is being considered separately, however.
"We are looking at our parks contracts at the moment but there has not been any decision on the management of [the University Oval] yet,'' Saunders said.
"We are still looking at all the options and given that that facility is a stand-alone facility, we are not under the same time pressures.''
DCC-owned company Delta currently maintains the ground and groundsman Tom Tamati heads up a small team charged with preparing the pitch and playing surface.
Saunders said the decision to review the contract was procedural and reports from New Zealand Cricket about the venue had been positive.
"We just want to make sure it is the best option and value for the our ratepayers' money,'' he said.
"We have had some reports through from New Zealand Cricket that have been complimentary about the ground and the condition of the pitch and the facilities.''
Saunders quashed rumours that Dunedin Venues Management Ltd would take over the reins.
"That's not right. I'm not sure where that has come from ... I certainly wouldn't want to be reporting that.''
The Otago Cricket Association has just this week confirmed it will go ahead with a $750,000 upgrade of the embankments at the venue and some preparation work has already begun.
Saunders said the review would not be an unsettling time for the association.
"We have an agreement with Otago cricket to maintain the venue and that won't change.''
A decision on who was awarded the contracts for the North and South areas of the city would be made "reasonably soon''.
"I couldn't give you a date. We have to go through the approval process first.''
