Erika Fairweather has led a strong start by Otago competitors at the national age-group championships.

The Neptune Youth Olympian won one of the region's three medals in Wellington on day one.

Her 100m freestyle time of 55.60sec achieved more than just the 15-girls grade gold medal too. It took 0.38sec off the national record in the grade and qualified her for the junior world championships in Hungary.

The time was also a personal-best by 1.5sec and left her 3sec ahead of her nearest competitor.

She was joined by Taieri's Jemma Wilson and Zenith's Charlotte Hewson in the final. Wilson missed out on a medal by the narrowest of margins - 0.01sec - while Hewson was seventh.

Jessica Scott added a second gold medal to Neptune's tally in the 16-girls butterfly.

She put on a dominant display to claim victory by 6sec, her preliminary time of 2min 20.34sec marginally faster than her time in the final.

Wanaka's Benjamin Silipo made sure the boys were in on the action with a silver in the 14-boys 200m butterfly. He swam 2min 21.49sec, a long way behind first but 2sec ahead of third.

Molly Law's (Neptune) time of 58.21sec set a yet to be ratified 16-girls 100m freestyle record, finishing fourth in her final.
