Ben McLachlan has been upset in the first round of the French Open.

Playing alongside German partner Jan-Lennard Struff, the Queenstown doubles specialist was beaten 6-7, 7-6, 6-3 by Marcelo Arevalo and Jamie Cerretani.

Entering as the 14th seeds, the pair had been favoured going into the match.

That followed some strong form since reaching the Australian open semifinals in January.

However, it was not to be for McLachlan in his debut at the clay court Grand Slam.

The pair started well in an even first set, grinding out a 7-4 win in a tiebreak.

That was flipped in the second set, Arevalo-Cerretani winning a second tiebreak 7-3.

It was the third set where the American-Salvadorian duo pulled away.

They broke the McLachlan-Struff duo twice, taking the final set 6-3 to emerge winners.
