Lincoln death one of two on South Island roads

One person was killed in a crash near Lincoln on Saturday - one of two fatal incidents on South Island roads over the weekend.

In Canterbury, two cars collided at the intersection of Ellesmere and Tancreds Rds near Lincoln about 4.30pm.

Police confirmed one person died in the crash.

A St John spokeswoman earlier said five patients were taken to Christchurch Hospital.

One had critical injuries and was flown by helicopter, while one patient with serious injuries, two with moderate injuries and one with minor injuries were taken by ambulance.

A person also died in another other crash on Saturday near Athol, Southland.

Emergency services were called to the scene of the single-vehicle crash on State Highway 6 near Athol about 5pm. 

One person died and four people were taken to hospital with minor injuries.
