Kelly-Rose Blackburn is excited to see the Royal New Zealand Returned and Services' Association women’s section come out of recess in Ashburton.

The move was decided at a recent RSA meeting attended by 16 people.

As an RSA member, Kelly-Rose was actively involved in the section in the past.

‘‘The meeting went very well and the ladies present are keen for us to start meeting again,’’ Kelly-Rose said.

‘‘I am excited about us getting back together and enjoying each other’s company.’’

The group is open to any women who are members of the RSA, those involved did not have to be a service or former service women to join the group, which is for fellowship and support for members and the RSA.

Meetings will include speakers, entertainment and competitions.

Recently, Kelly-Rose met Canterbury District RSA president and five members of the Royal New Zealand RSA women's section while they were visiting Ashburton.

She said meeting the national executive was very helpful as she prepared to work on getting the section going again.

The national women’s executive updated Kelly-Rose on their organisation and shared information about Purple Poppy Day celebrated on February 24.

Kelly-Rose hopes now that the group is active that next year members can organise something for Purple Poppy Day

The day is to remember and honour the animals that have served and continue to serve in war and conflicts.

  • The Ashburton RSA women’s section will meet at the Ashburton RSA on the fourth Thursday of each month at 2pm. New members are welcome.
