Police are investigating after a stolen vehicle was set alight near a rural Canterbury intersection on Wednesday.

Fire crews were called to the scene near the corner of Station and Hoskyns Rds in Kirwee about 5.30pm to discover the vehicle "fully involved".

The incident has been deemed suspicious and has been passed onto police, a Fire and Emergency NZ spokesman said.

Police will look into the circumstances of the blaze, which took fire crews about 40min to bring under control and put out.
