Exercise and the promise of a hot drink at the gate has provided an incentive for hundreds of Dunedin primary school children involved in the Active August programme.
Dunedin City Council School Travel Plan co-ordinator Kerri Maclennan said the event was designed to create safer walking and wheeling environments around schools by reducing congestion at the school gate.
"Walking or wheeling to school has many benefits for our tamariki — it can improve physical and mental wellbeing, and road safety," she said.
"We are encouraging parents who can to voluntarily park a block or two away from school and encourage their children to walk or wheel the rest of the way."
The programme has proven popular with children in August, and is continuing with several schools to hold events in September.
