A cool and showery day was no problem at all for the 4000-plus people who enjoyed Christmas in the Stadium on Saturday.

Organised by the Acts of Kindness Charitable Trust for the seventh year, the giant community Christmas celebration was a resounding success, with about 2000 children enjoying an exciting array of play equipment and activities.

Headline performer Suzanne Prentice "went off and was amazing" and all the performers did an excellent job in keeping the crowds entertained, Acts of Kindness trustee Grant Hardy said.

The placement of the stage facing the main stand had worked very well, and would be repeated in future years, Mr Hardy said.

"All in all, this year’s Christmas in the Stadium was a step up.

"We are very happy with how everything went."

The Acts of Kindness Charitable Trust is now focusing all its attention on final preparations for the Community Christmas Dinner, to be held at Dunedin Town Hall on Christmas Day.

The Christmas dinner regularly attracts about 500 people, including people who may otherwise be alone on Christmas Day, and families in need.

A small army of volunteers prepares and serves the food, and there are dozens of table hosts.

There are still plenty of places available for people who wish to attend the Community Christmas Dinner as guests. To register phone Dunedin Community House on 471-6150, or register online at dch.org.nz
