Insurer FMG is reminding people to clean the lint filter in their dryers between each load.
FMG advice services manager Angela Taylor said lint buildup could result in filters overheating and igniting even after the dryer was turned off.
She also advised to leave at least a quarter of the dryer free so items could move around and aerate.
